- 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring (optional)
- 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, five-spice powder, black pepper, and red food coloring if using. ( until the honey fully dissolves, creating a smooth marinade).
- Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, ensuring they are well coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best flavor.
- Preheat your grill or oven to 400°F. If using an oven, line a baking sheet with aluminum foil for easier cleanup.
- Remove the chicken from the marinade, allowing excess marinade to drip off. Reserve the marinade for basting.
- Grill the chicken for about 6-7 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. If baking, place the chicken on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, basting with the reserved marinade halfway through.
- Once cooked, remove the chicken from the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
- Serve the sliced chicken garnished with chopped green onions.

- For a smoky flavor, consider adding a few drops of liquid smoke to the marinade.
- You can also substitute chicken thighs with chicken breasts for a leaner option.
- For a spicy kick, add a teaspoon of sriracha or chili paste to the marinade.
