Description

Char Siu Chicken is a flavorful dish featuring marinated chicken thighs grilled or baked to perfection, offering a sweet and savory taste.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring (optional)
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, five-spice powder, black pepper, and red food coloring if using. ( until the honey fully dissolves, creating a smooth marinade).
  2. Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, ensuring they are well coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best flavor.
  3. Preheat your grill or oven to 400°F. If using an oven, line a baking sheet with aluminum foil for easier cleanup.
  4. Remove the chicken from the marinade, allowing excess marinade to drip off. Reserve the marinade for basting.
  5. Grill the chicken for about 6-7 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. If baking, place the chicken on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, basting with the reserved marinade halfway through.
  6. Once cooked, remove the chicken from the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
  7. Serve the sliced chicken garnished with chopped green onions.

Notes

  • For a smoky flavor, consider adding a few drops of liquid smoke to the marinade.
  • You can also substitute chicken thighs with chicken breasts for a leaner option.
  • For a spicy kick, add a teaspoon of sriracha or chili paste to the marinade.
