Description

Crispy Fried Oyster Mushrooms are a delicious and crunchy appetizer that is easy to make and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups oyster mushrooms, cleaned and trimmed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.
  2. Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl. Dip each oyster mushroom into the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off.
  3. Next, dredge the buttermilk-coated mushrooms in the flour mixture, ensuring they are well coated. Return them to the buttermilk and then coat with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
  4. In a large skillet, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F.
  5. Carefully add the breaded mushrooms to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
  6. Use a slotted spoon to remove the mushrooms and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free option, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend and use gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture for a spicy kick or experiment with different seasonings like Italian herbs or nutritional yeast for added flavor.
