Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. In a medium saucepan, bring 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to a boil over medium heat.
  2. Once boiling, quickly stir in 1 cup of all-purpose flour, mixing until a cohesive dough forms, which should take about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the dough to cool for about 5 minutes.
  4. Once it's warm but not hot, add in 1 large egg and 1/2 teaspoon of optional vanilla extract.
  5. Mix vigorously using a spoon or spatula until the egg is fully incorporated and the dough is smooth and elastic.
  6. In a large skillet or pot, pour 2 cups of vegetable oil and heat over medium-high heat.
  7. Allow the oil to reach approximately 350°F (175°C); test it with a small piece of dough.
  8. Transfer the prepared churro dough into a piping bag fitted with a star-shaped tip.
  9. Carefully pipe long strips of dough into the hot oil, frying them for about 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
