  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil alternative oils if unavailable
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds can substitute with poppy seeds
  • 1 tablespoon red chili paste (Sambal Oelek) adjust quantity to preference
  • 1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger can substitute with ground ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic use fresh for best results
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar coconut sugar is a substitute
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot starch cornstarch can be used as alternative
For the Meatballs
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil can be omitted for lighter version
  • 1 pound lean ground chicken swap with ground turkey or pork
  • 1 large egg no substitutes necessary
  • 0.5 cups panko breadcrumbs use gluten-free panko if needed
  • 0.25 cups green onions finely chopped
  • 0.25 cups cilantro chopped
  • 0.5 teaspoons cayenne pepper adjust according to spice preference
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt adjust to taste
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper adjust to taste
For the Bowl
  • 2 cups broccoli substitute with other vegetables if desired

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, water, sesame oil, sesame seeds, red chili paste, ginger, garlic, brown sugar, and arrowroot starch until smooth.
  2. Make the Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine ground chicken, egg, panko breadcrumbs, green onions, cilantro, garlic, ginger, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Form mixture into meatballs.
Cooking
  1. Cook the Meatballs: Heat sesame oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and cook meatballs for 10-12 minutes.
  2. Cook the Broccoli: In the same skillet, add sesame oil and broccoli florets, sauté for 6-8 minutes.
  3. Combine: Return meatballs to skillet, pour sauce over and simmer for 2-5 minutes until thickened.
  4. Serve: Prepare bowls with rice, add meatballs and broccoli, and garnish with scallions, cilantro, and peanuts.
